First Sketches for Black Amber Design

It was back in late February early March that I got asked to do what has been the biggest commission of my life so far.

I was approached by Melanie Hick the Garden Designer who is creating a Garden for The Bat Conservation Society.

On the call Melanie kindly asked if I’d be able to carve a 7 to 8ft long legged Bat Totem for her garden at Chelsea Flower Show the following year.

I listened to her ideas and she wanted a path to go through the legs, so you would be walking through the Bat on a pathway.

As she was describing this my thoughts were ‘sounds wonderful’ but my body isn’t up to making something that big but I had this joy in my heart and by the end of the conversation I could see the Bat in my mind.

So I said yes and just went with it.
